My forces are ready. My commanders, poor as they are, have their orders. I even hope to get some help from allies. And on September 2, when Nazi Germany declared war on Poland and begins its advance, I begin air raids over the Rhineland and launch attacks on two regions, at different points in the line, with my armor ready to move once by infantry offers the smallest glimpse of a breakthrough.
I hope that the Germany Artificial Intelligence is not strategically smart enough to actually attack through Holland and Belgium (hey, I am playing France so I need all the help I can get).
As the military saying goes “No plan survives contact with the enemy”. I tried diversionary assault coupled with a real central thrust.
I then tried a pincher move. I launched my tactical bombers to provide some local air superiority. Unfortunately I did not manage to break the German line.
I apparently drew enough forces to their Western border to give Poland another three months of existence but I was foiled in my plan to strike to the heart of the enemy.
Hearts of Iron 3 is a game that encourages contingency plans so I went to my own plan B. I proposed an alliance to both Holland and Belgium in order to try and launch a left hook move with my armor formation and capture some territory.
I also hoped to get to Kiel and maybe the Denmark ports and set them as objective for the United Kingdom, hoping for some troops from them.
The move began well enough but before I was able to rush my divisions forward Holland all but crumpled. I had not time to save Amsterdam and establish a line at the major rivers in the country so I concentrated my forces and tried again to make a gap in the German line.
Always the AI managed to plug the gap and push me back. They did not manage to enter France proper but I also failed to enter Germany. It seems that despite my efforts a good old Phony War situation has developed.
