Eminem probably loves controversy just as much as he loves presenting his fans with riddles to solve. With his latest video, for the single “Space Bound,” he offers both, with a single jarring image of himself pulling the trigger on a gun turned on himself.
Undoubtedly, “Space Bound” is just as heartbreaking as “Love the Way You Lie” was. Both song and video tell the story of a doomed relationship, marked by jealousy and violence, often times misplaced, and insanity.
Whether, at the end of the 4.30-minute video, all that we see was imagined, a figment of the imagination of a feverish or demented mind, or real is entirely up to each of us to decide.
“Filmed in Los Angeles in February, the Joseph Kahn-directed clip starts with our leading man walking down a foggy road in the middle of the night. Obviously perturbed, a sullen Em marches on, hands in his pockets, until a passing car picks him up,” MTV News writes.
The driver is Em’s love interest, played by adult movie star Sasha Grey. The two are definitely having issues – but so does Eminem, as it soon becomes clear.
The car has another occupant in the backseat: a more perturbed, definitely more violent Eminem, who’s constantly hurling insults at his girlfriend, even though she can’t hear him.
The one riding in the front is not only calmer, but also quite determined as to what to do next, as it becomes clear from the way he keeps looking at the gun in glove department.
After a series of even gloomier scenes and tension so thick you can cut it with the proverbial knife, Eminem and his girlfriend end up in a motel room, with her lying on the floor and he on top of her, strangling her in one final fit of fury and jealousy.
Only that, she’s not even there. Desperate and confused, Em puts the gun under his chin and pulls the trigger – and the scene is presented in all its gory details, with the bullet exiting through the top of his head in an explosion of blood.
“Did Eminem imagine the entire ordeal? Or did his cheating girlfriend metaphorically kill the hopeless romantic, leaving only a distrustful version of himself? The image is jarring; the interpretation, however, is up to you,” MTV notes.
