After 4 months of headaches and having to put up with the Calciopoli pressure, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president, Guido Rossi, stepped down yesterday evening. The decision was both his and his assistants' and it came after intensive critics from the Italian media.

The main reason why everybody asked for Guido to step down his position inside the FIGC was his appointment as future head of Telecom Italia. Due to the conflict of interests created,
Rossi had no other choice but to resign, despite Italy's Sports Minister Giovanna Melandri praising the job he has done so far.

"The commissioner and his assistants, collectively and individually, note that the conditions do not exist for the continuation of the work that has been undertaken to bring Italian football back to health. Therefore with that reasoning they have brought forward the end of their mandate", said Rossi's staff in a statement, as reported by ANSA.

Before making his decision public, Guido Rossi spent almost 40 minutes discussing the matter with the president of CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) Giovanni Petrucci. They both agreed that this was the best way to proceed in the future.

Melandri, on the other hand, admitted that Rossi's job during the Calciopoli scandal was outstanding and assured the tiffossi that reforms inside Italian football will go on: "I am very grateful to professor Rossi for the job he did until now and I want to assure everybody that his replacement will continue the reform even stronger inside Italian football".

Guido Rossi took over the job from Franco Carraro in May 2006. Carraro was forced to resign his position due to the match-fixing scandal inside Italian football and was questioned during Calciopoli's investigations. CONI is yet to announce the name of Rossi's replacement.
