Hawken has finally opened its doors on Steam, its Early Access feature no longer being conditioned by a purchase, the game being free to play once again.

The shooting game featuring the crowd's all-time favorites, big hulking mechs, has been on Steam Early Access since last month, only now opening its doors to the public. Initially requiring a payment in order for players to gain access to the metal clad beasts of war, Hawken is now a free-to-play game accessible to all.

Adhesive Games' shooter made the transition to Steam and sacrificed its free-to-play status for around three weeks, the devs stating that requiring a purchase in order to gain access was the best way to gradually expand the player base and control the server load.

The Hawken website still has bundles for sale, and interested players can check out the offers and support the great game, with the added note that the Nemesis Bundle has been discontinued.

The game is currently in beta and still featured as an Early Access game, expected to have a full release later this year, and the developers intend to offer their players various types of competitive and cooperative multiplayer matches.
