A Hawaii man discovered the versatile qualities of miso when he managed to put out a house fire using a big pot of miso soup.

On Saturday morning, an electrical short caused a fast-moving fire in the laundry room of Reuben Prensky’s mother’s house. The Hawaii Island home was nearly engulfed in flames, after the short circuit ignited a fire.

Luckily, 41-year-old Prensky, who had come from Canada to visit his mother, woke up to the fire’s crackling sound. When he went to the laundry area, he discovered a plastic sink on fire and saw that the flames were already reaching the roof.

The man quickly ran to the kitchen and grabbed the pot of miso soup, which happened to be within his grasp. He then dumped it on the fire, which slowed it a little bit and gave him enough time to grab the garden hose and completely douse the spreading fire.

“Everybody agrees, if that fire had gone on for about 30 more seconds, it would have burned the whole house down,” Prensky’s mother said, according to Yahoo News.

“I'm very, very grateful. He saved the house, he saved the day, he might have even saved my life,” she added.

Damage to the house was estimated at $10,000 (€7,300), but fire officials said the man’s quick thinking saved about $200,000 (€145,100) in property damages.
