The Fantastic Beasts franchise will hopefully replicate the success of its predecessor

Since September this year, when J.K. Rowling announced that she’d written a “Harry Potter” spinoff script for Warner Bros., there’s been a lot of talk about how this would be the next big franchise coming from the movie studio. Turns out that’s precisely what’s happening.

The Telegraph reports that, in September, Warners trademarked Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and, since then, it’s been trademarking countless other themes, which hint they’re working on more than just one movie, even if they’re in planning stages for now.

Other trademarks include the name Newt Scamander, the name of the book Quidditch Through The Ages, but also the Quiddich teams Wimbourne Wasps, Chudley Cannons, and Kenmare Kestrels, and Kennilworthy Whisp, the fictitious book’s fictitious author.

“All are trademarked for a variety of media, including live-action film, reality TV series, animated series and films and computer games. This gives weight to the claim made by the Studio's CEO Kevin Tsujihara that they would ‘build a film franchise’ off the back of Fantastic Beasts,” the publication says.

“Harry Potter” is one of the biggest selling movie franchises ever; if the Fantastic Beasts franchise can match even half of its gross, it would still be a winner for Warners.
