Sony could launch better versions of the console throughout its life cycle

Avalanche Studios, the developer behind the Just Cause series, believes Sony's PlayStation 4 approach to hardware, of using lots of PC-like components, could lead to various upgrades appearing throughout the console's lifecycle.

Sony impressed fans by showcasing lots of PlayStation 4 games and features last month, but also developers by confirming that it's dumping the PS3's complex Cell chip and going with a more PC-like system made by AMD.

This is great news, according to Avalanche Studios' Chief Technical Officer, Linus Blomberg, who told GamingBolt that Sony's strategy could lead to incremental hardware upgrades throughout the PS4's lifecycle.

"The off-the-shelf philosophy behind the architecture makes sense from a pricing and heating point of view, but it also means that Sony more easily can make incremental improvements of their system. If that’s actually their plan I don’t know, but it could help preventing the inevitable loss of market shares that the long console cycles entails."

It's unclear whether Sony will do such a thing, as upgrading a console could divide the PS4 market and its owners.
