With the introduction of Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft has undoubtedly captured the attention of both application and web developers with the focus on hardware acceleration, albeit for different reasons.

While web developers will now be able to build richer Cloud apps tailored to the GPU acceleration enhancements in IE9, app developers are bound to have seen an opportunity to embrace the power of the graphics card for their own code.

And far is that there’s nothing stopping them from doing so. Companies such as Google and Mozilla, but also others, are also accelerating their applications leveraging the resources provided by default in Windows.

But more can do so. The Redmond company produced a range of sessions at PCD 2010 illustrating how devs can better take advantage of what Windows has to offer.

“Get Accelerated! How Every Developer Can Use the GPU in Any Application” is just such a session, and devs can watch it here.

“Chas. Boyd –PM Architect with Windows Graphics at Microsoft- delivered a general overview of the Windows Graphics architecture, its different APIs and the application types they are intended to.

“It’s a 100-level session, what means that is informative with no code being shown, but a gentle overview for those of you interested in starting with GPU-enabled applications who may have wondered about its many technologies or felt a bit overwhelmed in your initial approaches to it.

“The speaker offers an interesting list of usage examples of all these APIs in usual Microsoft applications like Office, Bing Maps, Windows Live or Internet Explorer, among others. The presentation ends with a list of further references and some follow up sessions delivered in the same conference,” revealed Microsoft’s Diego Dagum.

Developers will also be able to download the video featuring Chas Boyd as well as the PowerPoint presentation associated with the session.
