Today, KDE celebrates its 10th birthday, and as I am a big fan of KDE, I just wanna say a big HAPPY BIRTHD color="tomato">AY KDE! On the 14th of October 1996, Matthias Ettrich announced the beginning of a project (Kool Desktop Environment (KDE), which is now one of the biggest and most exciting open source projects: "The idea is NOT to create a GUI for the complete UNIX-system or the System-Administrator. For that purpose the UNIX-CLI with thousands of tools and scripting languages is much better. The idea is to create a GUI for an ENDUSER. Somebody who wants to browse the web with Linux, write some letters and play some nice games.". Ten years later KDE has become the number one desktop environment in the Open Source world with an amazing community of hundreds of developers and millions of users, which made big parts of Matthias' original vision become reality. About KDE: KDE is a powerful Free Software graphical desktop environment for Linux and Unix workstations. It combines ease of use, contemporary functionality, and outstanding graphical design with the technological superiority of the Unix operating system. KDE is a network transparent contemporary desktop environment for UNIX workstations. KDE seeks to fill the need for an easy to use desktop for Unix workstations, similar to the desktop environments found under the MacOS or Microsoft Windows.
