Hantro, a provider of ultra low power video codec solutions for wireless IC designs announced that it has signed an agreement to license its multi-format hardware video codecs to Freescale Semiconductor, one of the largest manufacturers of embedded semiconductors. The combination of Freescale Semiconductor's system-on-chip solutions and Hantro's codecs is expected to enable high-performance video capabilities with low power consumption in mobile devices.

"Freescale is one of our largest and most innovative
semiconductor customers," said Eero Kaikkonen, CEO of Hantro Products. "This licensing agreement further strengthens our relationship with Freescale and together we can help ensure the mobile phone market will be served with even more competitive products than before."

Optimized for low power and high performance, Hantro's 6280 (hardware encoder) and 7190 (hardware decoder) multi-format hardware video IP products are well suited for multimedia-enabled chipsets. Supporting all the major video and still image formats (H.264, H.263, MPEG-4, VC-1, and JPEG), the IP cores enable video services on mobile devices ranging from low-cost feature phones to high-end Mobile TV or Personal Media Player devices. The ultra low power designs enable up to HD 720p (1280x720 pixels) resolution video capture and playback at 30fps in battery-operated mobile devices.

"Hantro's multi-format hardware video IP products are designed to meet the high performance standards of our baseband products, while providing the ability to optimize silicon area utilization," said Tom Deitrich, Vice President and General Manager of Freescale's Cellular Division.

So far, Hantro's designs have been incorporated in over 200 million handsets sold worldwide. Provided as intellectual property, Hantro's portfolio includes hardware and software MPEG4, H.263, H.264/AVC and VC-1 video codecs, audio codecs (AMR-NB and Enhanced aacPlus) and still image codecs (JPEG codecs supporting up to 16MP), as well as integration platforms and applications. Hantro currenlty has a customer base that includes leading companies from around the world such as Nokia, Samsung Electronics, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Orange, Alcatel.
