HannStar Display intends to break through the 17 inch display worldwide market, boosting up profits and reducing costs for the mass production.

The company's vice president Chin-Hao Chou said in an interview taken by DigiTimes that the maker will ship its first panels on the emerging markets such as Turkey, hoping it will sell between 300,000-400,000 units per month by the Q2 of 2007.

There are numerous advantages for the company if it will decide to switch to the 17 inch panel dedicated market which is already expected to surpass the success of 15 inch displays that now has 20% of the worldwide monitor panel segment.

Moreover, the company also announced that it will retail its displays at about the same price as the 15 inch ones - only $10-15 more, as currently the bigger displays are being sold at approximately $30.

"Each substrate at HannStar's fifth-generation (5G) LCD plant can be cut into fifteen 17-inch widescreen panels, compared to twelve 17-inch panels or sixteen 15-inch panels, Chou indicated. Since the cost difference between the 17-inch widescreen and 15-inch traditional panels is not significant, HannStar plans to use 17-inch widescreen panels to counter the 15-inch traditional panel market, "said Mr. Chou cited by DigiTimes.

HannStar's vice president also added that the company has already started the mass manufacturing of other displays - the 19- and 22-inch widescreen panels, as the 27-inch widescreen panels will enter production in October for Europe and the US.
