The other day, Hank Williams Jr. landed himself in very hot waters after going on Fox & Friends and comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler. In a new statement, Williams says he was completely “misunderstood.”
Check out the video below to see the context in which he made the comment as well.
Speaking of a game of golf in which Obama and House Speaker John Boehner played for the same team, Williams said that would be “like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu. Not hardly.”
As a consequence, ESPN yanked Williams’ famous theme song from Monday Night Football.
In a statement to TMZ, Williams claims that the comparison served the purpose of showing how ridiculous it was to have the two together on the same team, but that it meant no disrespect to Obama.
“Some of us have strong opinions and are often misunderstood. My analogy was extreme – but it was to make a point. I was simply trying to explain how stupid it seemed to me – how ludicrous that pairing was,” he says.
He doesn’t apologize for saying those things and he doesn’t seem to ever intend to.
“They’re polar opposites and it made no sense. They don’t see eye-to-eye and never will. I have always respected the office of the President,” Williams goes on to say.
His comment only came from being concerned about the current situation in the US, he says: he was trying to draw attention to it, the best way he knew how.
“Working class people are hurting – and it doesn’t seem like anybody cares. When both sides are high-fiving it on the ninth hole when everybody else is without a job – it makes a whole lot of us angry. Something has to change. The policies have to change,” he underlines.
