Shortly after updating its YouTube application in the Play Store, Google has also released a new version of its Hangouts for Android devices. Although it’s just a small bump in version from 2.1.100 to 2.1.223, it actually brings quite a lot of new features.

First of all, those who opted for Hangouts as their main messaging application will be pleased to know that Google has added a unified SMS block list.

In addition, the developers have also included a Hidden contacts list and a keyboard indicator button that would allow users to switch between numpad and full keyboard layouts.

The update also introduces a new feature for group hangouts which are now saying “Send to group” instead of “Send Hangouts.” Last but not least, Hangouts for Android has been updated with a set of custom notification tones for individual contacts.

Keep in mind that this is a staged rollout, so it might take a while until the new version of Hangouts reaches all compatible Android devices. Make sure you check your phone from time to time to see if the update is available.

All in all, you can now download Hangouts for Android 2.1.223 for free via Google Play Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Android 2.3 and up.
