Arnault Perret has had the great pleasure of informing us about the immediate availability for download of the first point release of his lightweight and unique GNU/Linux distribution, HandyLinux 2.1.

According to the official release announcement (available only in French), HandyLinux 2.1 is now based on the recently released Debian GNU/Linux 8.1 (Jessie) operating system and includes various updated software packages and many under-the-hood improvements.

The Iceweasel web browser has been updated with default configuration for supporting .torrent and magnet links, some APT configuration files that pointed out to "experimental" repositories have now been purged from the distribution, and two new games have been added, LTris and FloboPuyo.

HandyLinux 2.1 removes the aptitude package manger that was previously used for upgrading the operating system, as it is not needed anymore, and update-notifier package has been added in the default software repositories of the distribution. Also, the documentation has been updated.

A bug has been fixed in the pixup.sh/py file, which is used for uploading on canvas-free, and various applications have been set by default for opening files in the HandyLinux operating system.

Existing HandyLinux 2.0 users don't need to download the new ISO

As expected, these updates are already available to existing HandyLinux 2.0 users, so they don't have to download the new HandyLinux 2.1 ISO image to keep their installations up to date. All they have to do is check for updates and apply any existing patches.

However, please note that the patch for the pixup.sh/py script is not available in the repositories and the new games must be installed manually from the upstream Debian repository. The pixup.sh script will be available at a later time, as part of a forthcoming update of the handylinux tools.

Last but not least, there's now a new Iceweasel theme that you can easily install from Mozilla's gallery of themes, just search for handylinux. Download HandyLinux 2.1 right now from Softpedia.
