Arnault Perret had the great pleasure of informing Softpedia about the immediate availability for download of his HandyLinux 2.0 distribution based on the recently released Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 (Jessie) operating system.

Being based on Debian 8, HandyLinux 2.0 will be supported with security patches and software updates for five years, until 2020. Prominent features include an updated HandyMenu, updated HandyLinux tools, the addition of the BTshare P2P sharing tool, addition of custom actions for the Thunar file manager, Skype gateway option, introduction of new launchers, as well as integration of the Orca screen reader and magnifier.

Among other new features, we can mention password control support, "handylinux" as default hostname, MenuLibre for editing the Xfce menus, bash-completion, cups-pdf, Transmission BitTorrent client, Iceweasel themes, Carlito and Caladea fonts, LibreOffice configs and templates, updated notifications, apt configuration, anacron, command-not-found, unoconv, and a "Templates" folder in the Home directory.

HandyLinux 2.0 got a Spring cleanup as well

It looks like HandyLinux 2.0 is a complete new system, as many of the default apps have been replaced with new ones. For example, GNOME PackageKit is now used instead of Software Center, Xarchiver instead of File-Roller, Catfish and mlocate instead of GNOME Search tool, Clementine instead of Quod Libet, Ristretto instead of Shotwell, Mousepad instead of Leafpad, and xfce4-rating-plugin instead of Xpad.

In addition to the new features and improvements mentioned above, the HandyLinux 2.0 distribution got a good cleanup too, as numerous applications and package have been removed, including Minitube, Zram, Slingscold, Phonon, win32-loader, OggConvert, xl-wallpaper, BleachBit, Nitrux icons, NitruxButtons, and compiz-handylinux.

Furthermore, the out-of-date APT preferences for the LibreOffice office suite have been removed, along with the deprecated fuse-utils, Netatalk, Ntfsprogs, xfprint4, gtk3-engines-unico, and dfc packages. Also, some cleaning through the wallpapers and the Iceweasel add-on has been performed.
