A brand new Halo title launches today, in the form of Halo: Spartan Strike, a spiritual successor to the previous Spartan Assault, which provides a fresh twin-stick top-down shooter experience on the PC as well as on select mobile devices.

The Halo series has been around for quite some time, and franchise owner Microsoft saw fit to not only keep releasing major installments, like the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians, but also to partner up with other studios to launch different types of titles.

Last month saw the reveal of Halo Online for the PC, a free-to-play multiplayer shooter designed for the Russian market, and now Microsoft confirms that a new top-down shooter is launching today.

More specifically, Microsoft confirms on its Xbox Wire that Halo: Spartan Strike is launching today across the PC and mobile platforms like iOS and Windows Phone.

The title is a spiritual successor to Halo: Spartan Assault, a previous game in the series that also portrayed a twin-stick top-down shooter experience.

This time around, instead of acting as a prologue to Halo 4, the new title takes place during the events of Halo 2 on the planet of New Mombasa in 2552. Players take control of a Spartan supersoldier that must complete 30 challenging missions in a classified ONI simulation. They'll lead UNSC troops through cities and jungles, while wielding weapons, abilities and vehicles.

The new game brings special features on the Windows 8 operating system in the form of weekly challenges and leaderboards. What's more, those who earn achievements for the profile they also use on the Xbox One can unlock an exclusive emblem, nameplate, and avatar in Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

The game launches on PC via Steam and the Windows 8 Store, as well as on Windows Phone 8 devices, iPhone, and iPad today, April 16. It costs just 5.99 USD/EUR.
