It's unclear whether the series will be expanded

Halo: Nightfall is set to be offered via a variety of digital channels on March 17, after its debut on the official Halo Channel, but the team at 343 Industries in charge of the franchise is still eager to show that it can deliver some unique details linked to the live-action story.

The unlockable Second Story content is now offered separately for all fans who are interested in getting access to the whole narrative linked to the universe.

Gamers can use the links included in the official announcement to explore three new arcs, which take gamers "from the colonies of Sedra and Aleria to the charred remains of Alpha Shard."

The new stories are called Acquisition, Human Element and Intervention, and point to how the Nightfall universe could be expanded in the coming months.

The entertainment division at Microsoft was dismantled in late 2014, so it is unclear whether the company plans to spend more resources on continuing to expand Nightfall or deliver complete sequels for it.

The story of Nightfall will have an impact on the way the Master Chief-focused campaign in Halo 5: Guardians will start and evolve.

It's unclear whether 343 Industries and Microsoft have long-term plans to continue to expand the lore of the series using live-action movies or if they will focus more on novels, like the upcoming New Blood.

Halo 5: Guardians is very important to the Xbox One

Nightfall and its Second Story might not have a huge impact on the Halo universe, but they are important because they keep fans engaged during a period when there's no new title to play.

The Master Chief Collection continues to have problems and that means the community needs to coalesce around other types of content as it waits for Halo 5: Guardians, which will be launched on the Xbox One at some point in the fall of this year.

The new title will introduce some big changes when it comes to multilayer, with gamers now able to use a range of Spartan abilities, including the much debated sprint.

343 Industries has already announced that, after feedback offered in the beta, it will allow all players to disable them in all the custom matches they create in Halo 5: Guardians.

There are also changes being made to CSR, weapon use and the way matchmaking works.
