Neill Blomkamp, the movie director best known for creating District 9, says that the collapse of the Halo-based movie he was working on was one of the biggest strokes of luck in his life because it allowed him to focus on an original project.

Originally, a movie featuring Master Chief was set to be created by Microsoft in collaboration with Peter Jackson’s production company, but the project failed to evolve past the planning stages.

Blomkamp is quoted by Hitfix as saying, “The luck is the fact that Peter and Fran let me make out of the ruins that were ‘Halo’. What happened out of that was learning to trust my ideas. If ‘Halo’ had come out and succeeded or failed, I wouldn’t have learned that.”

Apparently, the movie director is not interested in working with any big franchises at the moment, despite the fact that District 9, with its blend of classic science fiction and human emotion, led many studios to contact him.

The director adds, “There are many franchises out there I would love to participate in. The problem is when you agree to do that, you take a lot of the control that you have over your own creative destiny away from yourself.”

At the moment, Neill Blomkamp is getting ready to launch a new science fiction project called Elysium.

No Halo-based movie is currently in development.

During the announcement of the Xbox One home console, Microsoft said that it was working with veteran science fiction creator Steven Spielberg to make a live action television series based on the franchise.

It seems that the content will only be offered to those who subscribe to the Gold version of Xbox Live on the new platform.

No details about the narrative of the Halo series or the launch window have been offered.
