The video game division of Microsoft has announced that it is currently working with developer 343 Industries on the development of Halo 4, a new first-person shooter in the long-running series, with the launch date set for the holiday period of 2012.

As one would expect the Halo 4 will only be available on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

The Microsoft E3 press conference had Halo 4 as its biggest reveal, although the company has not offered any clear information on the game.

343 Industries has revealed that Master Chief, the hero that managed to almost single handedly defeat both the Covenant and the Flood threats, will be the star of the game and that he will be joined in his adventures by everyone’s favorite blue Artificial Intelligence, Cortana.

Microsoft delivered a short trailer for Halo 4, which mostly restates the ending of Halo 3, showing Master Chief as he rises from his crio sleep and moving towards a bigger ship that seems alien to the universe of the game.

It’s interesting to see that Microsoft is sure about the launch date more than one year before it comes around, but that the company is not interested in offering gamers as much as a sneak peek at the game.

343 Industries has said that the game will form the basis for a whole new gaming trilogy, which probably means that humanity and the Chief will be assaulted by an all-new enemy, encouraging the universe to get over the rivalry between the Covenant and the UNSC.

Neither the developer nor the publisher talked about use of the Kinect motion tracking system, although the recent focus on it from Microsoft means that players should expect to have the option of controlling Master Chief by waving their arms as they will do with music and movies.
