We live in high-tech days and many people want their entertainment to be at the highest possible quality, meaning that non-high-definition content might not be everybody's cup of tea as a lot of people have HDTVs and current-generation consoles.
That is why you don't see a lot of games running on sub-720p resolution on consoles like the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. But one upcoming game that has generated quite a lot of controversy surrounding its resolution is Halo 3: ODST, which will be running on the same engine of its predecessor, Halo 3, meaning that it will also run at the same resolution of 1152x640.
Needless to say, fans have split into two factions and are fighting over this resolution. Interviewed by Videogamer at this year's GamesCon in Cologne, Germany, the community director for Bungie, Brian Jarrad, revealed that people were placing an unnecessary amount of attention on this small fact.
“I think the game looks great. I think like CJ Cowan, director of cinematics pointed out, ODST looks even better than Halo 3, and it's the same technology and the same engine,” Jarrard explained. “Whether it's 640p native or 720p, I mean I don't think that's really a deterrent to whether or not the game looks good and is fun to play. I think it's a bullet point media love to pick up on, and they love to pick and pry. But I feel like it's definitely overrated.”
The Bungie exec also revealed that the Halo 3 engine was quite powerful and it would run like clockwork on the Xbox 360 this fall when Halo 3: ODST will use it. “We're very happy with the engine we have, and how robust it is and the ability to have all these great features. If that means that we've shaved off 20p somewhere, so be it.”
Fans just need to wait until September 22 when this game will be released exclusively on the Xbox 360 to see just how pretty or ugly it really is.
