Some women are known to shed a tear or two whenever they cut their hair, but Halle Berry is definitely not one of them. If anything, she believes hair is nothing more than an accessory and, consequently, it should be treated as such.
Speaking with People magazine, the actress, who is now rocking a very trendy and fitting short ‘do, says she’s always rebelled against the notion that only long hair can be beautiful.
“When I have my short, short hair, that’s when I’m my best self. But hair doesn’t define me. It’s just an accessory that I get to wear, like a handbag or shoes,” she says.
Of course, it wasn’t always like that: when she first got started in Hollywood and she too had long hair, she did not have the option to cut it short because, if she did, no one would want to work with her anymore.
Halle says that, back then, she was defined by her long hair and, implicitly, by her looks.
“I personally fought against that stereotype when I first started acting. I would go on acting auditions, and every black girl would have this long, curly hair, whether it was real or not. And I would go to these auditions and come back with nothing. So I had to somehow be different,” Halle recalls.
This is precisely when she decided to cut it short, a decision that, she says, her manager promised her she would regret because she would never work again in the industry.
“I remember I went up to my manager’s office and his heart probably stopped beating. And he said, ‘You’re never going to work, you’re not what they want!’ And I said, ‘Good. Let me be something different then’,” Berry explains.
In almost no time, she landed her first TV job on an ABC show: she honestly believes today she was chosen because of her short hair.
“I was different and not like everyone else. It was the way I kind of rebelled against… the notion that you have to have long hair to be beautiful,” Halle says.
There can be little argument, we assume, that Halle is stunning regardless of the length of her hair.
