14 DAY TRIAL // Some three years ago, while she was still dating the father of her daughter, Halle Berry said that she would not even consider tying the knot again because she did not believe in the institution of marriage anymore. Her words are now coming back to haunt her.
As her fans must already know, as of January this year, the stunning actress is engaged to be married to Olivier Martinez, whom she started dating shortly after she and Gabriel Aubry broke up.
In a first interview since word got out of the engagement, Halle confirms the happy news and hints she's come to regret speaking in such drastic terms of never wanting to get married again.
“Who knew? I swore [marriage] off, right?” she tells Extra in the interview, as the video below will confirm. “Never say never, people!” she adds with a smile.
She's referring to those many times when she insisted her previous two marriages, which ended in nasty divorce battles and accusations flying from all sides, had been enough to make her swear off matrimony for good.
As noted above, even when she was still with Gabriel and the two of them and their daughter, Nahla, formed one of the most adorable and good looking families in showbiz, she stressed marriage was not on the table.
If anything, Halle said in an interview dating August 2009, being with Gabriel confirmed for her that marriage was not essential to make a relationship work.
As far as she was concerned, a diamond ring and a piece of paper could not change anything in the way she felt about another person, and the other way around, just as it could not make either more committed to the relationship.
“I’m much clearer about what a relationship is, which is why I will never marry again. Gabriel and I have a great partnership and a lovely daughter,” she said at the time.
“But I once was stupid enough to say, in a previous relationship, ‘I’m going to be with this person for ever,’ and realized, as I grew, that I don’t know if for ever is possible,” the actress continued, adding that she and Gabriel never thought of their romance as of a “for ever” type of thing.
Now that both Halle and Olivier have confirmed the engagement, fans are expecting another important announcement: the wedding date.
