14 DAY TRIAL // Square Enix's Collective initiative has apparently sparked yet another success, in the form of Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander.
The game is currently undergoing a crowdfunding campaign on popular fund raising platform Kickstarter, following its graduation from the Collective, a community-based assessment service where gamers can vote on various game projects.
The projects that manage to get through after the conclusion of the initial campaign get help from Square Enix when it comes to setting up a professional Kickstarter campaign, thus improving their chances to meet their goals.
Developer Massive Damage Inc.'s Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander is a space-based roguelike role-playing game, featuring gorgeous pixelated visuals and some pretty intriguing and complex gameplay elements.
The game involves base building, tactical combat, crew management, and offers a unique breed of emergent storytelling, where your crew's personality and your own choices mold your voyage through the universe.
A diverse mix of gameplay mechanics
The action takes place in the midst of a cataclysmic war, during which a group of Terran officers stumble upon an ancient space station and attempt to use their superior technology in a desperate bid to save the human race from extinction.
The basic design was inspired by titles such as Star Control 2, Master of Orion, X-Com, Civilization, and of course, FTL, the premier spaceship roguelike game.
You recruit and train a crew of diverse characters and then embark on a glorious and perilous adventure through a merciless sector of the galaxy, full of enigmatic alien artifacts and species.
Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander features both fleet-based and ground-based tactical battles, interspersed with classic 4X mechanics, such as rebuilding your starbase, constructing new facilities, researching new technologies, and exploring and exploiting new star systems.
The campaign has already managed to double its initial funding goal, and is currently blowing through its stretch goals. There are plenty of things to unlock yet, including space pirates, a brand new subfaction with new story events, more starship customization features, and some yet undisclosed tiers.
