Without a doubt this news will be welcomed by members of the jailbreak community who, as of now, have a simple way to install Google’s mobile operating system on old generation iPhones (iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G). Apparently, the hack can be accomplished as easily as accessing Cydia on a jailbroken unit, installing Bootlace, and using it to download and install the Android OS.

Via downloadsquad.com comes word that iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G users can now install the latest version of Froyo, Android 2.2.1, without needing a computer. The whole process can be done over Wi-Fi!

The site appropriately notes that hackers have managed to make the process of installing Froyo on the iPhone even easier than it is to update most Android phones.

As for the actual guide to accomplish this, Redmond Pie has all the steps broken down nice and clean with screenshots accompanying every step of the way.

Softpedia will also be looking into the process of putting Froyo on iPhones soon.

As usual, hacking is not encouraged by our web site, but we’ll try to work up a tutorial ourselves with the purpose of ensuring that the chances of bricking the iPhone are minimal.

For now, we’ve concluded that putting Froyo on the iPhone basically requires installing Bootlace 2.1 from Cydia, running it, and launching iDroid. The handset, of course, needs to be jailbroken to have Cydia installed in the first place.

It is worth noting that Bootlace 2.1 is only compatible with iPhone 2G running iOS 3.1.2 and 3.1.3, and iPhone 3G running iOS 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 and 4.1.

The jailbreak tools supported by Bootlace 2.1 are the iPhone Dev Team’s PwnageTool and Redsn0w, as well as geohot’s Blackra1n.

Needless to point out, those who plan on performing this hack with a clean device will first need to first follow the steps required to jailbreak the handset, then follow the instructions for installing Android via Bootlace.

Non-savvy users stand a good chance of losing valuable data, or putting the phone in a non-working state, should they proceed with such actions.

Therefore, those who are timid about the whole deal should settle with reading about it in the news.
