Hackers Change High School Grades

- Experts at ShoposLabs remind educational institutes to secure their networks

By: Traian Teglet, Technology News Editor

If you have been a student, you most certainly know how inconvenient it is when you receive a low school grade. The wonders of technology have allowed the creation of computer-based school networks in economically developed countries like the United States. Like everything else that is based on a computer, these school networks are vulnerable to attacks from skillful hackers.

The experts at ShoposLabs have reminded educational establishments that it is highly important to secure their networks. The announcement was made today, in a press release, following the news of hackers who have altered students’ grades at a Texan high school. The news about the hacking attack led to the investigation of four Hightower students who are presumed to have changed the school grades of approximately 60 students.

The investigation of the four students has revealed that the Fort Bend Independent School District will have to deal with a financial loss of approximately $191,400. It is said that almost 80 school computers have been discovered with malware. It seems that the large amount of money is mainly due to the fact that the graduation day is almost approaching. This means that the school staff will have to work overtime in order to change back the students’ grades.

Two of the potential hackers are only 15 and 16-years old and are under investigation due to the fact that their grades were raised after the hacking incident took place. The low age of the two suggests that students will go to almost anything to ensure their academic success. They would have probably gotten away with it if it weren't for the large number of students who had their grades changed.

Sophos is a well known security company that provides antivirus and antispyware products to mainstream and business users. They are also known for having a series of security reports about the different security threats worldwide.

Hackers Change High School Grades - USER OPINIONS

Comment #1 by John Davies on 2008-05-09, 12:44 GMT reply to this comment
Back in 1976 I did some social engineering (before that term was invented) and learned how to change grades on the school computer.

I brought this new information to a group of hacker friends (before that term was invented). Our first thought was to give ourselves all As. The next thought was to give our friend Mouse (another hacker who wasn't there) all Fs. Our final thought was to give Mouse all As then turn him in and watch the fun commence.

Eventually we decided that the outcome could not possibly be as fun as we imagined it to be and decided to do nothing.

I don't think Mouse ever knew how close he came to the Principal's office that day.
