The Steam services are back online and everything is fine

All the Steam services were down for about one hour and a half on September 19 and one group of hackers has claimed responsibility for it.

Usually, any kind of Steam downtime is announced beforehand, but the Steam users were surprised to see that nothing in the entire ecosystem was working, including the forums. The problems were fixed rapidly, although there is no official word on why this happened.

Unofficially, a hacking group has claimed credit for bringing down the Steam network and they bragged about it quite a bit on Twitter. It's unsure whether they actually had anything to do with it, but they call themselves SiteKillerz and seem to specialize in DDOS attacks (Distributed Denial of Service). They also say they are against ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), but it's unclear why they would attack Steam.

Besides the attack on the Steam servers, the group also claims to have stolen the credentials for 200 accounts, although that would is doubtful, given the security behind Valve's infrastructure.

Valve hasn't commented yet on these issues, but they might say something if the SiteKillerz claims turn out to be true. In the meantime, it looks like everything is back online and functioning.
