Free spirits gather at DefCon to show off fashion and skills

The DefCon hacker conference is not just about cyber ninjas and their methods to defeat the security of any product thrown at them; it is also about freedom of wearing whatever the “hack” you want.

From this perspective, it can be said that the geeks are hacking fashion concepts, too, and it may happen for designers to find plenty of inspiration at such non-conventional gatherings.

This year, just like on previous occasions, attendees did not feel shackled by convention and came to the event groomed as their personality dictated, because DefCon is not about what you look like, but what you can do with your skills.

Kilts, mohawks, brightly-colored hair, pierces, wacky suits, hats with faces, crazy/awesome-looking boots, all sorts of beards and mustaches, tin foil hats, and mohawks again, are all part of the charm of the convention.

Some may even look at it as a ComiCon for hackers, and although there are lots of games, most of them are pretty serious ones designed to celebrate thinking out of the box, or to push skills to the limits.

“How you dress is historically a sign of your success. In hacking community, your measure of success is what you do and how you dress becomes something independent of that,” said Jeff Ferland of Facebook, in a video published by Forbes.
