The lack of sophistication hints that it wasn’t the work of a nation state

Hackers caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage after launching an attack against the security camera systems of the Carmel Tunnels toll road in September.

According to the Associated Press, the cybercriminals used a Trojan to breach the computer systems. On the first day of the attack, the road was locked down for 20 minutes. On the next day, the cameras were disrupted once again, leading to a shutdown of the road for eight hours.

It’s uncertain who was behind the attack. However, experts told the AP that it wasn’t sophisticated enough to be the work of an enemy state such as Iran.

Instead, it appeared to be more like an operation launched by hackers such as those of the Anonymous movement.

Officials have declined to comment and the company that operates the toll road blamed a “communication glitch.” However, during a speech held earlier this month, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, Israel’s military chief, warned that cyberattacks were among the top threats.
