Taiwan-based mobile phone maker is set to upgrade most of the Android-based handsets it launched during the ongoing year to the latest flavor of Google's mobile operating system. The new version of the platform, Android 2.2 (Froyo) was announced officially on Thursday at the Google I/O conference, and comes forth with a nice range of enhancements over the previously available Android 2.1 Eclair solution.

“[…] if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can't be more specific yet,” HTC stated, according to a recent article on Android Central.

The move was somehow expected, especially since most of these Android-based devices from HTC are high-end, or include a great deal of high-end features. Among those who weren't mentioned above, we can count the Nexus One, which is expected to be among the first handsets to receive the update, or the HTC Legend, which was released back in February with Android 2.1 on board.

Unfortunately, the exact release date for the upgrade is still a mystery, but we can only hope that HTC will deliver it as soon as possible. Moreover, it still remains to be seen whether other handset vendors will follow suit. A nice range of appealing devices landed on the market lately with Android on board, and users are certainly hoping that the Android 2.2 OS flavor will become available for them too. Keep an eye on this space for further details on the matter.
