Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC is expected to launch a new Android-based handset today, the long rumored HTC Pyramid, which was said only recently to be headed for the market as the HTC Sensation, and the device has just been confirmed.

In all fairness, the confirmation does not come from HTC themselves, but from one of their partners, namely Qualcomm, which provided the application processor inside the new device.

As reported before, the new HTC Sensation (Pyramid) smartphone should land on shelves with a dual-core Snapdragon Qualcomm application processor, with each core clocked in at 1.2GHz.

And this is exactly what Qualcomm said in a recent tweet (via): “Qualcomm's 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor powers HTC Sensation.”

Moreover, the company posted a link to a YouTube video, which can be seen embedded at the bottom of this article, in which the performance capabilities of the new chip are explained.

The HTC Sensation projects itself to be a quite appealing device, especially with the fast application processor inside, though it won't be the first dual-core handset to break the 1GHz speed barrier.

A few days ago, South Korean handset vendor Samsung announced that its Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone would hit shelves with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor too, and that it would start shipping before the end of this month.

As stated above, the new HTC Sensation is expected to become official today, during a press event that HTC confirmed since a few weeks ago.

Although nothing was unveiled on this device as of yet, rumor has it that it would sport a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, along with an 8MP camera on the back, and that it would run under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

Further confirmation on the handset's near launch comes from Vodafone UK, which has put it up on its website. Unfortunately, the carrier does not offer specific info on the handset's arrival. Stay tuned for more.
