T-Mobile’s “Project Emerald” includes this device

Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC Corporation is reportedly gearing up for the release of its first device to pack inside a dual-core processor. Moreover, it seems that this device is nearing a market release on T-Mobile's airwaves, and that it should land on shelves under the name of HTC Glacier, while packing inside a Snapdragon chip from Qualcomm.

For the time being, of course, nothing has been officially announced on the matter, but the guys over at AlienBabelTech say they have strong proof that the device indeed packs the said new processor inside. Based on some entries in the GLBenchmark 1.1 results database, which shows that a HTC Glacier device was tested, though no photo of it was made available, they determined that the new handset would indeed pack the dual-core chip from Qualcomm.

For what it's worth, the company did announce a while ago that it was already sampling dual-core processors and, based on the long relationship between HTC and Qualcomm, it was expected for the Taiwanese maker to be among the first to use the solution. Since the benchmarking tests show that the upcoming HTC Glacier can deliver much higher performance levels than existing devices that pack 1GHz Snapdragon processors do, the handset was said to include one of the new CPUs.

According to the news site, there is a great possibility that the HTC Glacier would turn out to be what the long rumored T-Mobile “Project Emerald” is all about. Previous reports on this suggested that we should expect for a dual-core mobile phone to be included in the initiative, and the Glacier fits the bill. However, these are only suppositions for the time being, and chances are that they won't pan out in the end.

One argument in this direction would be the fact that Samsung's Galaxy S handsets, which pack the company's single-core 1GHz Hummingbird processor, would be able to deliver performance levels similar with Glacier's, as the benchmarking test shows. In the end, chances are that Qualcomm improved its solutions to boast better performance, or that HTC decided to adopt a new processor for new devices, so as to offer a better experience to its users.
