A bigger display is always better

When HTC officially presented its Touch HD Pocket PC, just two days ago, almost everyone said (or at least thought) that this device was one to make Apple and its iPhone 3G jealous. We now have the chance to see the Touch HD and the iPhone 3G next to each other, so we can better compare them.

A semi-review of HTC Touch HD has been posted on the French website GeekInc, including lots of live pics with the Pocket PC, some of them featuring both the Touch HD and the iPhone 3G. Unfortunately, the website we're talking about is currently down, but we did manage to save some of the photos found there.

The first impression upon seeing HTC and Apple's handsets together is that the former clearly eclipses the latter when it comes to display size (although the devices' overall sizes are similar). Well, that's kind of logical, since HTC has pushed the “resolution boundaries” providing the Touch HD with a 480 x 800 pixel display. Perhaps the single not so great thing is the fact that Touch HD's screen only supports 65K colors, while the one of iPhone 3G can display up to 16 million colors. Still, 480 x 800 pixels is definitely better than 320 x 480 pixels (iPhone's screen resolution).

Together with the big display, the Touch HD also brings a 5 Megapixel auto focus camera that should take photos at a far better quality than the 2 MP non auto focus one packed in Apple's smartphone. Moreover, the new HTC product also offers lots of other advanced features, including GPS, Wi-Fi, 3G connectivity, a 3.5mm headset jack and so on.

Of course, there's still the Operating System matter: Windows Mobile with TouchFLO 3D vs. Mac OS X 10.4.10 with support for multi-touch input. Some might prefer the first one while others the second one, but as far as overall specs go, HTC's Touch HD is undoubtedly superior to the iPhone 3G.

Customers will be able to buy brand new Touch HDs quite soon – before this year's end. The handset's price can only be on the hefty side, but if you decide to buy one you'll at least get to enjoy one of the largest screens ever included in a mobile device.

UPDATE: A long video with the Touch HD has just appeared on YouTube, so we're inviting you to watch it. Once again, the iPhone 3G seems to be overwhelmed by HTC's latest handset. The video is in French, but even if you don't know the language you still have a lot to see in it:
