HTC One M9 might be a good phone, if not for the camera

The HTC One M9 was made available for consumer pick-up not so long ago, and albeit the phone received mostly positive initial results, there has been a problem that has been frequently highlighted.

The HTC One M9’s camera doesn't seem to impress that much and we’ve heard reports that the phone has some issues with luminance and HDR.

The company abstained from using the UltraPixel technology we saw on the One M8 and included a new Toshiba-made 20MP BSI sensor in the new flagship.

However, it seems that HTC needs to work on improving the camera experience, because users are pretty unhappy with it. The competition is also offering some strong alternatives.

HTC rolls out software update to fix camera troubles

HTC is well aware of the problems encountered by customers, and luckily, it is providing users with a fix. HTC America’s president Jason Mackenzie announced a software update to fix the camera problems on the One M9.

The update will be going out in the US between April 10 (meaning today) and April 17. And as it turns out, the rollout is connected with the device’s carrier. Thus, it appears that HTC One M9 owners under Verizon and Sprint will be able to get the camera-fixing update first, while AT&T and T-Mobile units will receive it a week later.

For the time being, we don’t know whether other users outside the US will get the soft update or not.

The folks at Phandroid already got their unit updated, so they were able to test the difference in performance before and after the update. According to them, the new software improves the shooter’s capabilities in a lot of scenarios, including in indoor and outdoor scenarios.

Bear in mind that the update is designed to fix the problems with the main 20MP camera and won’t affect the performance of the selfie snapper located in front. Check out the gallery below to get an idea of how the new build improves the overall shooter performance.

HTC recently unveiled the One M9+ handset, which made a debut with a 5.2-inch display with 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution and a MediaTek MT6795T octa-core chip clocked at 2.2GHz and fitted with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

Although the One M9+ has been released, the standard One M9 remains the company’s only flagship offered for the US market.
