HTC’s One M9 camera just got much better

HTC’s latest One M9 flagship hasn't been around for long, but so far the phone has received pretty satisfactory reviews from the press and fans alike.

However, one thing that seemed to pop up in a lot of testimonies related to the phone was that the camera performance was much lower when compared to current flagships on the market, like the Galaxy S6, even though the company ditched the UltraPixel camera we saw the One M8 arrive with and included a new Toshiba-made 20MP BSI sensor into its latest flagship.

So, HTC still needed to concentrate on improving the camera experience, because users were reporting getting pretty unsatisfactory results.

HTC America acknowledged these issues and started rolling out a software update not so long ago, in order to fix the camera problems on the One M9.

And as we told you a few weeks ago, the new software did seem to make things better, as the camera’s capabilities have been improved in both indoor and outdoor scenarios.

Keep in mind, though, that the update only tackled problems experienced by the main 20MP camera and did nothing to bump up the performance of the selfie snapper located in front.

HTC One M9 gains RAW shooting capabilities

Anyway, when the HTC One M9 launched in Canada, the company also promised RAW capture support for the device’s main photo snapper.

The sensor’s capacity is quite lofty, but given the limitations of the JPEG compression, finer details were sometimes scrapped off from the equation.

With this new update, the phone gains the ability to shoot in RAW mode, which allows users to produce a DNG (digital negative) file on top of the regularly-sized JPEG.

Therefore, users will be able to edit facets of the photo straight into popular digital desktop imaging apps like Lightroom or Aperture. Editing the file on the phone itself is not currently available, but this functionality might be made available at a later date.

So, as previously promised, HTC is now delivering RAW shooting capabilities to the One M9. The feature can be accessed after users download the update via the Google Play store.

The RAW-shooting feature is a nice addition to have, especially since the competition is also offering this feature. The LG G4, for instance, sports RAW mode out of the box.
