The update is pushed OTA (over the air), in stages

It's only been a few days since Verizon started rolling out Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 for HTC One M8 and now it looks like AT&T is making the same move.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 won't be available to all Lumia smartphones since Microsoft plans to upgrade most of them directly to Windows 10 Mobile.

However, all the other devices not manufactured by Microsoft should be getting the update. The reasoning behind this decision might be the fact that these OEMs that launch Windows Phone handsets might not offer Windows 10 Mobile upgrades when the new OS is released.

Well, most of them should do that, but Microsoft wants to be sure that those smartphones that will stay on Windows Phone 8.1 will benefit from all the new features and improvements included in this version of the OS.

Keep in mind that this is just speculation, but if true, it could explain why Microsoft decided not to offer Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 to all of its Lumia smartphones.

Anyway, it looks like AT&T has just started to deploy the highly anticipated Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 for HTC One M8, WindowsCentral reports.

Get MKV and Bluetooth HID support

One of the few high-end smartphones powered by Windows Phone operating system, HTC One M8 will most certainly be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile when Microsoft releases it, possibly this fall.

The advantages implemented in Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 include MKV support for video playback, Bluetooth HID support for external keyboards, Reset Protection feature, Reorganized Settings screen with categories and search, App permission toggles, and Pin Individual Settings to the Start Screen.

If you own a Windows Phone handset other than Lumia 735, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL or Lumia 830, then you probably know by now that you can force install Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 on your smartphone by using unofficial methods.
