The upgrade was delayed for about a week

The Android 5.0 Lollipop update for HTC One M7 and One M8 GPE device is finally rolling out as we speak. The saga has ended after owners of these particular smartphones have been denied the update due some delays caused by the build sent by HTC to Google.

In fact, it’s still unclear who exactly is at fault in this case, as HTC claimed it did send the Android 5.0 Lollipop build to Google for technical approval, but for unknown reasons they have been denied the rollout until today.

Those who purchase Google Play Edition smartphones in order to receive OS updates quickly may want to know that handset manufacturers are handling these updates for GPE devices, not Google.

The Nexus phones and tablets are the only ones receiving updates directly from Google, which is why they are always the first to get them.

Back on the HTC One M7 and One M8 GPE devices, it’s worth mentioning that the company’s VP for Products Mo Versi confirmed earlier today that Google had finally given the technical approval for Android 5.0 Lollipop for both smartphones.

As a matter fact, these smartphones will be upgraded directly to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, as this build corrects one or more issues that have been reported by those who already installed the upgrade on their Nexus devices.

According to HTC, the update is pushed OTA (over the air) in stages, so it might take while until it arrives on all One M7 and One M8 GPE devices.

If the update is available for your smartphone, make sure you have a stable Wi-Fi connection and at least 50% of the battery charged. The update should be around 500MB in size, which is why we recommend HTC fans to download it via WiFi.

Other HTC smartphones should receive the Lollipop update beginning next year

These are the first HTC smartphones to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade, but the Taiwanese company confirmed the standard versions of One M7 and One M8 would also be updated to the latest version of Android by the end of January or early February.

Other HTC smartphones may follow the company’s flagship smartphone, but for the moment there aren’t too many details available on the matter.

The One mini and One mini 2 are likely to be upgraded to Android 5.0 Lollipop as well, but that will probably happen much later next year. We will keep an eye out for any additional details on the matter, so stay tuned for more info.
