HTC One 2, a device spotted online a few times before as HTC M8, expected to prove the successor of this year’s HTC One, is getting closer to an official launch.

The smartphone has just received the necessary approvals from the Wi-Fi Alliance, after a UK judge confirmed a few weeks back that it would be released as HTC One 2.

HTC has yet to announce any of its plans on the device, and rumor has it that it would be set to make the move as soon as February, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. However, it is possible that HTC would plan a different launch event for the device as talkandroid notes.

The smartphone should pack enhanced hardware specifications when compared to this year’s HTC One, currently the flagship device from the Taiwanese mobile phone maker.

In fact, pocketdroid claims that it will be able to prove a real successor for the currently available device, as it will arrive on shelves with a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor packed inside.

Furthermore, HTC’s upcoming flagship handset should pack Adreno 330 GPU, along with 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal memory.

Chances are that it will be larger than the HTC One, with a 5-inch touchscreen packed on the front, capable of delivering a full HD resolution. A microSD memory card slot, the same as HTC One max features, could also be included inside the phone.

One thing that appears to be certain at the moment, however, is the fact that HTC One 2 will run under Google’s Android 4.4 Kit Kat operating system, the latest flavor of the mobile platform.

Unfortunately, no confirmation on the smartphone’s specifications and capabilities has emerged until now, though it should not be too long before it does. Keep an eye on this space to learn more on the matter.
