Leaves HTC Dream out of the equation

Canadian mobile phone carrier Rogers is reportedly getting ready to deliver its users the possibility to enjoy the newly unveiled Android 2.1 operating system on some of their already existing mobile phones. More precisely, the operator has confirmed that it will offer Android 2.1 for the HTC Magic handset, but also stated that it wouldn't make the same move for the older HTC Dream.

“By mid-year, HTC will issue an upgrade to Android 2.1, including the highly acclaimed HTC Sense experience for the HTC Magic. However, due to certain limitations on the HTC Dream, the software path for the HTC Dream will not be developed beyond the next Android 1.5 update. While we regret not being able to offer the same updates to both devices, by bringing this upgrade to the HTC Magic, we are delivering the best solution possible given the situation at hand,” Rogers said in an official statement, according to Android Central.

HTC Dream owners on Rogers' airwaves should also note that the company plans on delivering a new software solution for them too, namely Android 1.5. This update is expected to arrive within a matter of weeks for both Dream and Magic, but only the latter is expected to make the step to the next stage, it seems. However, this does not come as too good news for HTC Dream users out there, as Rogers has reportedly stated that none of the units currently available on the market around the world will taste Android 2.1 (though it seems T-Mobile G1 might have another fate).

The new software solution from Google, as many of you might have learned already, sports a great deal of enhancements, including a series of 3G capabilities, which seem to be the main impediment for providing the update to the older Dream. On the other hand, Magic owners out there have a reason to rejoice, as their handset is now almost confirmed to receive the new firmware, considering that Austria's A1 also announced plans to make a move in this direction.
