14 DAY TRIAL // It seems that the second mobile phone powered by the Google Android operating system that will come to T-Mobile's airwaves might not be named the G2 phone after all. We already know that the HTC Magic has passed through FCC's hallways and that it is to be released with the carrier in the near future, but the name that the device will sport is still a mystery.
As many of you might already know, T-Mobile is the carrier that launched the first Android handset, the HTC Dream, which was added to the company's lineup under the name of T-Mobile G1. And since HTC Magic is the second Android device to be launched by the operator, it was expected to come under the name of G2.
Yet, things are not so sure after all, not when it comes to the moniker the device will have with the carrier in the US. While in Europe it will come with Vodafone as HTC Magic, it will sport another name in the US, and it seems that it hasn't been set just yet. While it could be G2 or HTC Sapphire, as seen in a roadmap that was leaked back in February, it might as well be named otherwise.
According to TmoNews, a customer survey leaked snapshot would show that G2 hasn't been one of the options for the name of the Android device at all. Thus, the device might be called G3, or “T-Mobile Genius 3G,” “T-Mobile myTouch 3G with Google,” or “Prism 3G with Google.”
It is rather uncertain why the handset would go under the G3 moniker, especially since we also learned that another Android mobile phone due for release with the carrier, manufactured by Huawei this time, would get branded T-Mobile G3. Anyway, it will be interesting to see which device gets which name in the end, though that will probably be influenced by the release date of the handsets as well, namely the one to launch first to be called G2, while the other one to get the G3 branding.
