Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC released on Thursday a new software solution for one of its most popular handsets on the market, the Android-based HTC Hero. According to the company, the new update for the device comes in the form of ROM Version 2.73.61.66, and has been released only for the HTC Hero available in the UK via wireless carrier Orange.

“An updated ROM is now available for HTC Hero customers to download. As always, HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience,” is all that the company has to say about the new software solution for the Android-based mobile phone. However, since the new software is already available for download via the handset maker's website, users can find out on their own what the upgrade brings along.

Those willing to go ahead and install the ROM upgrade on their HTC Hero handsets should first make sure that the solution has a newer version than the one already available on the phone. To do so, one will have to go to Home > Menu > Settings > About phone > Build number, where they will find the version of the software running on the device.

The installation process is a simple one, and users need to make sure that they have HTC Sync installed on their computers, and that the mobile phone is connected to the computer via the USB cable. The HTC Sync solution can be found on the microSD memory card shipped with the handset, HTC notes. However, since newer versions of the application have been delivered not too long ago, one might try downloading it from Softpedia too, via this link.

After connecting the phone, downloading the ROM upgrade and disabling the unlock pattern on the Hero, one can launch the installation process. However, performing a backup of the device prior to that is also a very good idea, just to make sure that no important files are lost. You can download the new ROM Version 2.73.61.66 for Orange's HTC Hero from HTC's support website here, where all the necessary instructions on the update process are also available.

Ive just installed the new ROM and the firmware version for Android is still 1.5.

Ive wiped my whole phone for no benefit, may just be worth waiting until 2.0 or 2.1 comes out.

No explanation of what this ROM contains or what benefits it will bring. Certainly not Android 2.x which all users are waiting / hoping / expecting.

Only created problems as I can't find a number of Apps in the Market which I had previously paid and downloaded (including MybackupPro and Camera FX Zoom). Any help anyone?

Looks to me that this update has caused two problems, firstly I am now unable to get any notification sounds, the trackball still glows but no sounds received. Adding a language and locale is also now a problem, language set okay but unable to add a locale as the option is now not available. Don't know what extras or fixes the update has done but from my point it has cased at least two issues that weren't there before.

Cant see what all the fuss is about. You'd expect on an upgrade you would get some interesting upgrades. But cant see any improvement at all. What a waste of effort HTC!!!
