A generic software update

A new software update is currently available for download for the popular HTC Hero mobile phone from Taiwan-based handset vendor HTC. Released on the company's support website on Monday, the new software solution comes as ROM version 2.73.1100.5 and was meant only for handsets currently available on the market in Belgium.

Unfortunately, the leading smartphone maker does not offer specific info on what has been included in the new software solution. “An updated ROM is now available for HTC Hero customers to download. As always, HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience,” is how HTC describes the software update.

Users interested in downloading and installing the new software update on their devices should be able to do so via a desktop computer running under Microsoft's Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating systems. The phone would have to be connected to the device via an USB cable, while the company's HTC Sync application would have to be installed on the PC.

“Before you proceed the ROM Update Utility (RUU), please confirm the following: This software upgrade is a newer version than what is currently installed on your phone. If it is the same version and your phone is operating normally, there is no need to reinstall the software. To check what version is installed on your phone, press Home > Menu > Settings > About phone > Build number, and note the Build number,” HTC notes.

We should also note that the new software solution is only a generic update, which means that any specific applications or settings a carrier might have preloaded on the device would be lost. Users interested in performing the update should backup all data on the handset prior to launching the installation process, so as to make sure that they won't lose important files or info on the device during the update.
