Mobile phone carrier Cellular South has just announced the availability of a new software solution for one of its most appealing Android-based devices, the HTC Hero. We're referring here to the Android 2.1 Eclair update, which is now available for download from the company's website, and which should bring a nice range of enhancements to the device.

“Android 2.1 is now available for download online! Before you begin the software download, please make sure you have properly prepared your HTC Hero and PC for the update. The battery on your Hero and PC should be fully charged before you begin the update process,” the wireless carrier announced via its Facebook page.

The Android 2.1 operating system was brought into the wild in the beginning of the ongoing year on the Nexus One by HTC, and has started to roll out on HTC Hero ever since May, when US operator Sprint began deploying it to its version of Hero. Back in June, HTC rolled-out the update for European flavors of the device, and it seems that Cellular South decided it was high time it made the same move.

HTC Hero users should note that the update would erase all data on their device, which means that they are advised to perform a backup of all personal files on the phone before launching the process. At the same time, they should know that the update would have to be performed via a desktop computer. The Hero would have to be connected to the PC via an USB cable, and the HTC Sync software has to be installed on it.

Cellular South notes that, prior to the update, users should also: - Record Google login: This update will remove all apps from your device. You will need to login back into Android Market to retrieve your lost apps. - Backup contact and other vital information: Use the 30 day FREE trial of My Backup from the Android Market to back up your contacts and other vital information. If you chose to back up your text messages the update could take over an hour. - Adding MMS: The 2.1 update allows pics (MMS) to be sent to and from your Hero. If you want this feature, please add MMS to your account online or in store for an additional $5.99.
