Unofficial ports enable dual booting

HTC HD2, last year's flagship Windows Mobile 6.5-based handset the Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC Corporation brought to the market, has recently enjoyed a series of Linux ports. Among them, we can mention the Android 2.1 operating system, as well as a Ubuntu port, both of which are working pretty nice on the Windows Mobile handset, as the video embedded at the bottom of this article shows.

This is not the first time Android is being ported to devices that run under other operating systems (Apple's iPhone saw such a port not too long ago), nor the first time when HTC HD2 sees an Android port. However, as the video below shows, the guys who managed to come up with the port, and who call themselves HTC Linux, did a great job. All in all, HTC HD2 seems to be enjoying the Android 2.1 OS, and the tow are getting along pretty well.

For the time being, however, things are still buggy. A lot of work is needed before the solution actually becomes more user friendly than it is at the moment, but those interested in seeing HTC HD2 running another OS than the stock Windows Mobile 6.5 with HTC Sense, or capable of dual booting, should know that it is possible. When in Android 2.1, the touchscreen on HD2 works pretty well, and the solution seems pretty stable (it seems that things are expected to work just fine, since HD2 has similar hardware as the Android 2.1-based EVO 4G).

Of course, the solution is not an official one which means that, in case there are some who might want to give it a try on their HD2, they would do it at their own risk. In case something goes wrong, the device might be bricked. In addition to the details available on the Linux ports for HTC HD2 in the video below, users can also head over to Redmond Pie here to learn more info on the work on Android 2.1 and Ubuntu ‘Karmic Koala’ for HD2 version 0.1.
