HTC HD2, the flagship Windows Mobile 6.5-based handset that HTC brought to the market about two years ago, has just got a taste of Windows Phone Mango, as the videos embedded at the bottom of this article show.

Apparently, the handset is getting along pretty well with the next version of Windows Phone 7, even if there still are some things that do not work at the moment.

The HTC HD2 came to the market with hardware specs similar to those included in HTC HD7, which was launched in October last year with Windows Phone 7 on board.

However, due to the older design on HD2, aimed at the Windows Mobile platform, the handset was not eligible for an upgrade to the newer operating system flavor, at least this is what HTC and Microsoft announced last fall.

Officially, nothing changed here, and HD2 is still not planned for an upgrade to Windows Phone 7, but enthusiasts managed to find a way to bring the two together.

Moreover, they actually put the yet-unreleased Windows Phone Mango OS flavor on HD2, and showcased their achievement in a series of videos that can be seen below.

As stated above, not all things work at the moment, and the Windows Phone Marketplace is one of them, along with search and HTML 5 rendering in Internet Explorer.

A ROM to enable more people to get Mango on their older HD2 devices is already available into the wild, but it is not a complete software.

As the guys over at WMPoweruser note, future ROMs might arrive with improvements, and those who are interested in trying the software out might want to wait a bit longer before making the move, so that more polished ROMs surface.

Before downloading and installing the software, users should keep in mind the fact that this is an unofficial solution, and that they will do this at their own risk.
