The high-end Windows Mobile-based HTC HD2 has just received a new ROM upgrade on the airwaves of O2 UK. The new ROM version 1.72.206.3 is available for download from HTC's support website, yet the Taiwan-based handset vendor does not offer specific details on what the software solution includes.

“An updated ROM is now available for HTC HD2 users to download. As always, HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience. [...] Before you proceed, please confirm that this software upgrade is a newer version than what is currently installed on your device. If it is the same version and your device is operating normally, there is no need to reinstall the software,” the Taiwanese mobile phone maker notes on its website.

Those interested in downloading the new update should check on the ROM version on their devices by heading to Start > Settings > System tab > Device Information > Version tab, where they will find all the necessary details on the ROM version, CPU, and Radio version. According to HTC, the new ROM for HTC HD2 was released as a generic software update. Basically, this means that those who will install it will lose any additional software or settings the wireless carrier provided.

It should also be noted that users willing to install the update should back up all data on the device before proceeding. HTC notes that the process will erase all info on the handset, and a back up would prevent losing important files. At the same time, users will have to make sure that all applications on the HTC HD2 are closed, and that the phone's battery is at least at 50%.

The update process should take up to 30 minutes, and should be performed via a desktop computer. Users will have to connect the HD2 to the PC via a USB cable, and to have ActiveSync installed, in case the PC runs Windows XP, or Windows Mobile Device Center, in case it is based on Windows Vista. The new ROM is available for download from HTC's support website here.
