Owners of the HTC Droid DNA smartphone on the network of wireless carrier Verizon can now download and install the Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system on their devices, courtesy of an unofficial ROM for them.

The software, available courtesy of XDA-Developers, comes with the Sense 5.5 user interface and with the Linux 3.4.18 kernel inside, and is said to have been ported from the Android 4.4.2 update for the HTC One.

The Taiwanese mobile phone maker has started to push the update to the flagship handset several weeks ago, but it won’t make it available for the HTC Droid DNA for a while longer.

According to a leaked HTC update roadmap, Verizon’s customers might have to wait until March or April for the update to be officially released to them.

However, those interested in grabbing the new software earlier than that can now take the aforementioned unofficial ROM for a spin. It will bring along all the enhancements that HTC has pushed to the HTC One.

The ROM is said to sport CDMA and GSM device support, but it is not pre-rooted. However, users will need to root their HTC Droid DNA devices in order to install it (of course, they can root it once again after loading the new software).

There are three downloads available for interested users, including an odexed version, a deodexed one, and a patch to get CDMA working on the phone.

To grab the necessary files and learn more on how to install the software, head over to this thread in the XDA-Developers Forum. Juts keep in mind that this is not an official release, and that issues could emerge.

Those who will download the ROM and install it will do so at their own risk, and they will be the only ones held responsible in the event that anything happens with the device during or after the installation. Please, make sure you read the installation instructions before starting to load the ROM to your phones.
