Mobile phone carrier Vodafone is reportedly gearing up for the release of the Android 2.2 Froyo software update for the HTC Desire. The upgrade started a while ago for unlocked devices, and it seems that Vodafone would be among the first carrier to offer the solution for the branded devices sold to its users.

Vodafone is in the final stages of development and testing for the said Android 2.2 software update for the Desire, at least this is what a recent article on EuroDroid reads.

According to the news site, we should expect for the wireless carrier to start rolling-out the solution in a matter of days, as soon as it is finished and receives all the necessary approvals.

“We’re still developing and testing the Android 2.2 update for HTC Desire and working on its approval with Google and HTC. The start of the roll out is days, not weeks, away and as soon as the date is finalized we’ll let you know,” the company reportedly stated.

There are a nice range of enhancements the new software update is set to offer to Desire users, as well as a series of hefty performance improvements.

However, while the unlocked HTC Desire units out there already received the OS update, carrier-branded devices are expected to start receiving it at a later time, just as it happened with the Android 2.1 update for another HTC device, the Hero.

But Vodafone says it plans on speeding things up a little: “It’s an absolute priority for Vodafone customers to receive this update as soon as possible and that it works as we promised it would do.”

The carrier also announced that the testing process should be completed in the near future: “The testing process has taken a little longer than we initially anticipated, but we’re working hard to make sure it gives customers the best experience.”

All in all, it shouldn't be too long before the software update is delivered to Desire users on Vodafone's airwaves, even if no specific time frame was unveiled at the moment.
