HTC Desire, last year's flagship Android device from Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation, is set to get its first taste of Gingerbread before the month of July is over.

The leading smartphone maker has announced via its Facebook account that it is targeting the end of July as the time frame during which it would start rolling out the new software update for this handset.

Launched on shelves last year, the HTC Desire is currently running under Android 2.2 Froyo, yet it will soon be upgraded to the newer operating system version from Google.

“Hi everyone. We have more news about our build of Gingerbread for Desire. Our testing has gone well so we will begin rolling out the update by the end of July! Thank you again for your support,” the mobile phone maker notes on its Facebook account.

Although nothing is specifically mentioned, the handset vendor was certainly referring to the unlocked flavors of HTC Desire.

Some of those who own such a smartphone will be able to upgrade to the latest version of Android before July is over, while others will receive the new software soon after.

However, those who own a carrier-branded HTC Desire might not be as lucky, as it usually takes longer for new firmware to be approved by operators.

Even so, users should expect for HTC and mobile phone carriers to try to make the new Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS available for their devices in the coming months too.

Hopefully, the entire process will be over before the next flavor of Android is out, Ice Cream Sandwich, though there are little chances that HTC would make that OS iteration available for Desire too.

So far, HTC has not offered specific info on its plans for deploying the Gingerbread upgrade for Desire, but it would certainly make additional info available soon, so stay tuned to learn more on the matter.
