Today, Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC Corporation has made available for download a new software update for its HTC Desire handset available in Australia via wireless carrier Telstra. According to the reports on the web, this would be the Android 2.2 Froyo OS upgrade the handset vendor promised for Desire a few months ago.

The company notes that this is a ROM upgrade for the Desire, but does not offer specific info on what it includes, stating only that the solution is comes with ROM version 2.26.841.2.

“An updated ROM is now available for HTC Desire(Telstra) users to download. As always, HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience,” the company announced on its support website.

However, a recent article on Android Australia notes that the ROM upgrade is Froyo for Telstra's HTC Desire users.

The new software solution is available for download via desktop computers that run under Microsoft's Windows Sp, Vista or Windows 7 operating systems.

HTC Desire owners would have to install the HTC Sync application on their PCs to perform the installation.

Before proceeding with the installation, one would have to make sure that the new ROM version 2.26.841.2 is newer than the software version on the handset.

“To check what version is installed on your phone, press Home > Menu > Settings > About phone > Build number, and note the Build number,” the mobile phone maker notes.

To connect the device to a desktop PC, Desire owners would have to use a USB cable.

Prior to launching the installation process, one should back up all data on the device, as the upgrade would erase the phone clean.

“Please note that this upgrade will erase any data stored on the phone. We recommend that you back up all your data before performing this upgrade,” the handset vendor notes.

The installation should take around 10 minutes to complete. Users should not interrupt the process in any way, otherwise the handset would be rendered unusable.

All the necessary info on the new ROM upgrade for HTC Desire, as well as the downloadable file itself, can be found on HTC's support website here.
