According to an announcement from French carrier SFR, HTC Desire HD has just been confirmed for an Android 2.3 Gingerbread firmware upgrade in early April. Also on this upgrade train is the Motorola Defy, who will only get updated to 2.2 Froyo in the second half of April.

Rumors about Desire HD's software upgrade emerged earlier this month when a leaked Android 2.3 ROM was spotted in the wild.

This doesn't come as a surprise for either of the smartphones, as both HTC and Motorola have previously announced upgrade plans for both.

Even though the dates are approximate, it seems clear that different operators carrying the smartphones will offer their versions of the upgrades around the same time frame.

The Desire HD was the first smartphone powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8255 1GHz processor, unlike previous HTC devices which embedded the QSD8250 1GHz CPU.

The device comes with Android Froyo out-of-the-box and packs 1.5 GB internal memory and 768 MB RAM.

Along with HTC Desire Z, the Desire HD is fully compatible with all services offered by the newly launched HTCSense.com portal.

Other highlights of the HTC Desire HD include 4.3-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen, 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and dual-LED flash, HD video recording capabilities, HSDPA 14.4 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity.

The unusual, rugged Motorola Defy is dustproof and water-resistant certified. It has a 3.7-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen protected by Gorilla glass.

The phone features the MOTOBLUR UI and is powered by an 800MHz Cortex-A8 processor. The HSDPA-enabled smartphone packs 2 GB of storage, 512 MB RAM, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, as well as a microSD card slot.

Even though the upgrades have been announced only in France, we assume that it shouldn't take them too long to be rolled-out in other countries as well.
